When giraffes engage in what’s called “necking,” they aren’t being affectionate — they’re competing. Male giraffes swing their long necks and use their ossicones (horn-like structures) to strike opponents in a test of strength and dominance. These contests often determine access to females or establish hierarchy within a group. While it may look intense, most bouts end without serious injury.
