Part 4 of Agnes’s fleece is carding the wool into roving. First the locks are gently fluffed by hand to open them up for the carder. Drum carders have two drums, a small licker in and a large main drum, that turn in opposite directions, gently aligning the wool fibers. For this fleece it took two passes through the carder to make it fully smooth, so in the middle I pull it off as a batt, split that batt into strips, and recard those strips.
